Hokuto Ito

With patterns and compositions incorporating the symbolic capture of plants and animals, I express my unique individuality; I cannot do this with traditional iroe porcelain (decorated with a colored picture).
In the formation and pattern composition, I pursue the unfolding of decorative beauty, and continuously take up the challenge and possibilities of working with iroe.

  • 1961 Born in Nakano Ward, Tokyo
  • 1987 Graduated from the Department of Crafts at the Tokyo University of the Arts
  • 1989 Completed his Master’s Degree in Ceramics at the Department of Crafts, Tokyo University of the Arts
  • 1989 Apprenticed to FUJIMOTO Yoshimichi (Living National Treasure)
  • 1990 Selected for the Eastern Japan Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition (Selected several times to date)
  • 1993 Established his kiln in Hino City, Tokyo
  • 1997 Solo exhibition at Nihonbashi Takashimaya (Held biannually to date)
  • 1997 Two-men Exhibition at Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi (Held biannually to date)
  • 1999 Selected for the Japan Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition (Selected in 2003, 2004, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2013)
  • 2005 Appeared on “Utsuwa Yume Kobo” on NHK-BS2 broadcast
  • 2007 Full member, Japan Kogei Association
