Yukei Kakutani

Using an iron spatula to draw abstract patterns and patterns of plants on the inside of the casting mold to create relaxed designs. Seeking new forms and designs of the rings on the sides of the body while keeping them user-friendly.

Studio Kakutani Casting Workshop
  • 1942 Born in Osaka as the second son of tea kettle caster Ikkei Kakutani
  • 1961 Graduated from Osaka Kogei SeniorHigh School, Design Course
    Joined Toyobo Co. Ltd., Design Department
  • 1970 Studied under his father Ikkei
  • 1992 Received the Osaka Prefectural Award for Distinguished Service in Crafts
  • 2001 Established the Kakutani Casting Workshop (Misono-cho, Yao City, Osaka)
  • 2004 Submitted "Saginokama" to the "Contemporary Japanese Metalwork Exhibition" held at the Danish Museum of Art & Design (current Design Museum Denmark) (Copenhagen)
  • 2013 Produced the scared treasure "mikagami" for the 62nd Jingu Shikinen Sengu
  • 2015 Designated as Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property of Osaka for tea ceremony kettles, technical arts division
  • 2019 Submitted the "Tea Ceremony Kettle in Shape of Top and Stream Design" to Development of Contemporary Japanese Arts & Crafts 2019 at the Kanazawa Yasue Gold Leaf Museum
  • 2021 Dedicated "Tea Ceremony Kettle with Flowing Line Design" to ”Treasures of Heisei" Exhibition (Yakushiji Temple, Nara)
  • 2022 Submitted "Tea Ceremony Kettle with Angular Shoulders and Flowing Line Design" to the "Creation of Kogei – Living National Treasure Exhibition–” (Ginza Wako)

  • 1990Received the Japan Kōgei Association Incentive Award for "Tea Ceremony Kettle with Stream Design" at the 37th Japan Traditional Kōgei Exhibition (added to the collection of Agency for Cultural Affairs)
  • 1997Received the Japan Kōgei Association Incentive Award for "Ubaguchi Tea Ceremony Kettle with Heron Design" at the 44th Japan Traditional Kōgei Exhibition
  • 2002Received the Asahi Shimbun Award for "Flared Mouth Tea Ceremony Kettle with Fern Design" at the 32nd Metalwork Traditional Kōgei Exhibition
  • 2014Received the Kinki Traditional Kōgei Award for "Cylindrical Tea Ceremony Kettle with Cattail Design" at the 43rd Kinki Traditional Kōgei Exhibition
  • 2015Received the Japan Kōgei Association Incentive Award for "Tea Ceremony Kettle with Flower and Stream Design" at the 62nd Japan Traditional Kōgei Exhibition
